Spring Checklist for Pet Owners

Spring is a time of new beginnings, and that includes our furry friends. As the weather gets warmer, and the days get longer, our pets are going to want to spend more time outside. Here's a checklist of things that pet owners should do each spring to keep their pets healthy and happy.

Finish-Up Vaccines

Just like people, pets are susceptible to different illnesses at different times of the year. Many of the vaccines that protect them against these illnesses are given in a series of shots when they are young, with booster shots required periodically to maintain immunity. If your pet is due for a booster shot or hasn't been vaccinated in a while, now is a good time to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.

Keep an Eye on Allergies

Some pets can suffer from seasonal allergies. If you notice your pet scratching more than usual, sneezing, or having a runny nose or eyes, they may be allergic to something in the environment. Talk to Dr. Nicole at Onalaska Animal Hospital about possible allergy treatments, such as oral medication or allergy shots.

Check for Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks are more active in warm weather, so it's important to take steps to prevent them from making your pet their home. The team at Onalaska Animal Hospital can let you know which flea and tick prevention products are right for your pet; just be sure to follow the directions carefully. Some products need to be applied monthly, while others only need to be used once per season.

Get Rid of Winter Weight

Unsurprisingly, our pets can pack on a few extra pounds during the winter months, when we're all spending more time indoors. Once spring arrives, make sure to get your pet active again, so they can shed any extra weight. Regular walks or runs are a great way to bond with your pet while also getting them the exercise they need.

Microchip Your Pet and Update ID Tags

If your pet doesn’t already have a microchip, now’s a good time to bring them to Onalaska Animal Hospital to get one. A microchip is a permanent way to identify you and your pet should you become separated. While it’s also helpful to get them an ID tag with your contact information, the microchip remains with your pet wherever they go and whatever they do. If you’ve moved or changed your phone number recently, don’t forget to update their existing tags and microchip information. That way, whoever finds your pet will be able to get in touch with you right away.

Schedule a Routine Exam

It's always a good idea to have your pet checked out by a veterinarian at least once a year— even if they seem perfectly healthy! A routine exam allows us to get an overall picture of your pet's health and identify any potential problems early on, so we can develop an effective treatment plan if necessary. At Onalaska Animal Hospital, we can provide comprehensive examinations tailored specifically to each patient's individual needs.

Taking care of your pet is essential year-round, but especially during spring, when temperatures rise quickly. Following this simple checklist will help ensure that you are providing your pets with much of what they need to stay happy and healthy. If you have any questions about how best to take care of your pet this spring or would like to schedule an appointment for one of our services here at Onalaska Animal Hospital, please give us a call today.
