Onalaska Animal Hospital has welcomed a new veterinarian to its practice. Dr. Scott Macon joins Dr. Nicole Azene, veterinarian and co-owner at the practice, after serving the Winona, Minnesota, community for several years.
Dr. Macon has been a small animal veterinarian for more than 20 years and brings extensive experience with exotics and small mammals and animal training expertise. He also brings specialized surgical skills, including procedures such as adrenalectomies for ferrets, spays and neuters in small exotic animals, and perineal urethrostomies for various species.
Onalaska Animal Hospital opened last summer in response to the need for more veterinarians in the La Crosse, Wisconsin, area. The veterinary practice grew to capacity within months, driving the need for an additional doctor.
“We’ve developed something very special here, and Dr. Scott will add to that,” said Dr. Azene. He brings that combination of clinical excellence and deep-seated compassion that is our ethos. He values and respects the profound emotional bonds between pets and their owners as much as we do.”
Macon earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is a member of the Minnesota and American Veterinary Medical Associations. Before veterinary school, he developed and taught the first veterinary assistant program ever offered by Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois, that thrives still today.
An animal lover from the start, Dr. Scott was a marine mammal research assistant for the Walt Disney Company and trained dolphins for the U.S. Navy in a past life. Today, he has a two-year-old rabbit named Dusty and two rescue animals. One is a mixed-breed dog named May who is nine years old. The other is a 16-year-old long-hair cat named Puffin.
Onalaska Animal Hospital opened in 2022, becoming the first new veterinary clinic to open in La Crosse County in 30 years. Owned by Nicole Azene, DVM, and her husband Ezana Azene, MD, the hospital provides preventive, routine, diagnostic, dental and surgical care in a state-of-the-art facility and fear-free environment.
